Fredag d. 25/4-2008 modtog Xin Yao og jeg "KMD-prisen" for årets bedste IT-speciale (på IT-Universitetet i København). Udover hæder og ære ved at vinde prisen udløste det et rejselegat på 20.000,- som Xin og jeg selvfølgelig skal dele. Vi fik overrakt prisen som en del af dimissionsfesten for de nye kandidater på ITU.

I did it! September 10, 2007 I defended my master thesis at an oral exam (got the grade 10 in the new danish grade system, which corresponds to a B in the ECTS scale). Now I'm entitled Cand.it / M.Sc. in Information Technology with Software Development as my specialty. It is very nice to finally have set a period on many years of education. I'm looking forward to my work life with new and exiting challenges.

As of October 1, 2007 I'm employed at Lund & Bendsen A/S as Instructor and Consultant within software development primarely in technologies like Java, Java EE (JSP, Servlets, JSF, EJB, JMS etc), XML and Web services, Hibernate, Spring, and other interesting Java related frameworks.

M.Sc. Thesis delivered

Today Xin Yao and I handed in our thesis at the IT-University of Copenhagen with the title "Distributed Transaction Management in SOA-based System Integration". Next monday we will defend it at an oral exam. It has been seven interesting months with a lot of work, especially in the last couple of weeks! Quit as Microsoft Student Partner

As of February 2007 I officially quit as Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) at the IT-University of Copenhagen. I have to focus on my thesis, family, and job. After all I didn't feel I contributed much to the network and Henrik Westergaard Hansen (Academic Developer Evangelist at MS in Denmark) and I agreed on my resignation. It has been interesting to be part of the MSP network and I'll recommend students from ITU and other universities with interest in Microsoft technology (like ASP.NET, C#, LINQ, Visual Studio, Vista, XNA, WCF, WPF, Windows Mobile etc.) to consider the position. Just contact Henrik and I'm sure he will tell you all about it and consider you as candidate.

My exams are over!

Jubii! Today I attended my last exam for this semester. Now (almost) all my exams at ITU are over. The only one left is my thesis exam in september. I'll start my thesis in february with the title "Distributed Transaction Management in SOA-based System Integration".

Windows Vista available on MSDNAA

The Windows Vista Business DVD is available for ITU students at MSDNAA. Just log in into the system and goto Software and download the ISO. You will automatically get a license key when you download. If you downloaded the ISO before the system was able to generate the license keys (under serial number it says: Refer to installation instructions for product key) you have to contact sysadm at itu to get your personal licence key.

Service-oriented development of distributed systems

Description
Windows Communication Foundation is a new framework for distributed computing on the Windows platform.

WCF contains a unified programming model embracing previous Microsoft technologies such as ASMX web services, WS-E, .Net Remoting, MSMQ etc. Future connected systems and services will benefit from late binding of endpoint, hosting and policy.

With WCF, IT professionals will take a greater part in deployment of services in distributed systems and developers will stay focused on service functionality and writing code. Not only is WCF the framework for service orientation and building connected systems in the Windows environment, but it is also a integrator of the heterogeneous server farm. Interoperability is a key factor.

This TechTalk will introduce and show samples of the programming model and the new possibilities.

Anders Hejlsberg lectures at ITU the 10th of November

This is great news for all people with the slightest interest in programming languages. Anders Hejlsberg will do a lecture in the upcoming C# 3.0 and LINQ at ITU. During the lecture, Anders will reflect on the why's and how's of the new language innovations. There will be a 30 min Q&A session after the lecture - so start preparing your hard questions now!

Anders Hejlsberg is the chief designer of the C# programming language and a key participant in the development of Microsoft's .NET framework.

Academic TechTalks

I forbindelse med at jeg er Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) på ITU, har vi arrangeret en række Academic TechTalks som bliver afholdt med ca. en måneds mellemrum. Disse TechTalks vil vare ca. 2 timer og tage en masse spændende emner op f.eks. kvalitet i softwareudviklingen, SOA, XNA, C# 3.0, ASP.NET Atlas, Windows Presentation Foundation osv.

Jeg vil løbende annoncere datoerne for disse TechTalks her, men også sende mail ud til studerende på ITU. Desuden kan du følge med i Henrik Westergaard Hansens blog.

IT-Universitetet forbliver selvstændigt

Der har jo været en del debat og artikler i diverse medier om den fremtidige fusion mellem en række universiteter i Danmark. Ifølge denne artikel på computerworld.dk er det nu fastslået ay ITU kan forblive selvstændigt. Jubii!

Glæden er stor på IT-Universitetet i København, efter det onsdag eftermiddag af regeringen er blevet slået endeligt fast, at universitetet kan få lov at forblive selvstændigt. Det sker, efter rektor Mads Tofte fra IT-Universitetet har kæmpet for at bevare selvstændigheden for Danmarks mindste universitet.

Som studerende på ITU ved jeg hvor godt tingene kører nu, netop fordi det er et lille universitet med stor handlekraft og dynamik. Det ville være ærgerligt hvis det skulle ødelægges ved at blive opslugt i et stort, trægt superuniversitet.

It-uddannelserne har et image-problem

Computerworld skrev igår denne artikel om at it-uddannelserne i Danmark har et image problem og at der bliver optaget færre studerende på en række uddannelser bl.a. datalogi studiet. Udannelserne skal nu have flere kvinder, mindre kode-tænkning og flere kombinationer med andre fag. Computerworld gik faktisk helt amok igår og skrev ikke mindre end 4 artikler om problemer med it-uddannelserne. Der er et problem fordi:

En meget stor del af de danske it-virksomheder har nemlig for tiden problemer med at rekruttere det nødvendige antal højt-uddannede it-folk.

Danmark skal altså have flere højt-uddannede it-folk. De vil have at uddannelserne skal have mere fokus på anvendelsesmuligheder, flere kvinder og et generelt bedre image, og ikke fokusere så meget på programmering som tidligere. Udtalelser som disse er lidt skræmmende:

Vi er jo nødt til at kigge på, hvad der interesserer kvinderne, for vi skal have flere af dem ind.

Uddannelserne bør være langt mere anvendelses-orienterede - for eksempel ved at kombinere it og sundhed, it og innovation eller it og design og mange andre ting, siger John Sarborg Pedersen.

Ja, men hvad hjælper det at tiltrække flere studerende, heriblandt kvinder, hvis man propper uddannelserne med alle mulige fag som virksomhederne reelt ikke efterspørger. Det er jo de højt-uddannede folk de mangler! I min verden er det folk som reelt kan noget, ikke en flok generalister som kun har skrabet overfladen af mange af fagene.

IT-Universitetet (ITU) bliver fremhævet som et eksempel på en uddannelses-institution, der faktisk har evnet at løfte opgaven.

Det skyldes ikke mindst, at det på mange af it-uddannelserne på ITU står tydeligt, hvad uddannelsen kan bruges til. Og det er noget, som de unge kan lide.

Ja, ITU har også en masse flotte kommende jobtitler i deres beskrivelse af uddannelserne. Men hvad man kan når man er færdig har altså rigtig meget at gøre med, hvilke kurser man vælger. Og der er efter min mening mange som vælger for lette kurser - og faktisk vælger kurser som indeholder samme stof og niveau som på deres tidligere bachelor uddannelse. Virksomhederne har rigtigt nok brug for højt-uddannede it-folk, og det er man jo som cand.it'er, men man skal jo også kunne noget som tilsvarer sin titel.
