Lost a year of blog posts - but recovered

Some months ago I realized that my blog posts from May 13, 2007 to May 4, 2008 was gone!! Although I haven't been the most active blogger (it was only 15 posts) it was frustrating. Especially because some of them concerned my graduation as master of science, that our thesis won a thesis-of-the-year prize and that the media covered the topic.

Okay, so why did I loose the blog posts anyway? Because the company hosting my blog and database (www.web10.dk) lost all data and their backup server was out of order!!! Great with cheap hosting :-)

There was no way I could get the orginal data back from the database, so I tried googling with site:blog.decorus.dk and hoped they got cached versions of the blog posts (I also tried other search engines). No luck - I think I realized they were missing too late. Googlebot had already been there before and found that the URLs were gone. There were no signs of my blog posts on the web!

Today I visited my Google Reader account by a coincidence (I don't actually use it). What a pleasant surprise!! Apparently I had created a subsription to my own feed just to test Google Reader when I created the account. All my missing blog posts were right there with original dates, categories and so on. Cool!

Now I just had to recreate the posts in my blog software. I didn't want to do it manually (copy-paste text and so on). I shared the items in Google Reader which caused an Atom feed to be published. Now the plan was to import this feed into Wordpress, but the import tool only accepted RSS files. I found a tool - atom2rss - to convert the feed and within minutes my original posts were recovered.

Fredag d. 25/4-2008 modtog Xin Yao og jeg "KMD-prisen" for årets bedste IT-speciale (på IT-Universitetet i København). Udover hæder og ære ved at vinde prisen udløste det et rejselegat på 20.000,- som Xin og jeg selvfølgelig skal dele. Vi fik overrakt prisen som en del af dimissionsfesten for de nye kandidater på ITU.

Mute the Mac startup sound for good

The Mac is nice! The startup sound on Mac is a pain in the ass! Until today I have had to live with this annoying chime each time I boot the Mac. There is no way to turn it off out of the box! The only thing you can do is to mute your Mac before you shut it down and it will boot silently the next time. Who remembers that?? Often you just want to be discreet when booting up at the office and similar places. I just found a solution: Download and install StartupSound.prefPane. With this handy utility you can control the startup sound independently from the system volume. The preference pane looks like this:

Quicksilver on Mac - Colibri or Launchy on Windows

I've been using Quicksilver on my Macbook Pro for a while. This is a very nice utility for application launching and productivity in general. Recently I installed a Boot camp partitition with Vista, but I really consider removing Vista and return to XP because of performance issues. Vista is so slow to boot up and Exlorer just crashes randomly. But with my return to XP I'm going to miss some kind of application launcher. Vista got the Start Search feature which is kind of nice. I found two nice applications almost like Quicksilver that works great on Windows: Launchy and Colibri. Go check them out if you are using XP and don't like to manually search through your Start Menu for the application you need!

It's a funny example on how you quickly can get a product to market that actually works thus creating business value fast. M.Sc. in Information Technology

I did it! September 10, 2007 I defended my master thesis at an oral exam (got the grade 10 in the new danish grade system, which corresponds to a B in the ECTS scale). Now I'm entitled Cand.it / M.Sc. in Information Technology with Software Development as my specialty. It is very nice to finally have set a period on many years of education. I'm looking forward to my work life with new and exiting challenges.

As of October 1, 2007 I'm employed at Lund & Bendsen A/S as Instructor and Consultant within software development primarely in technologies like Java, Java EE (JSP, Servlets, JSF, EJB, JMS etc), XML and Web services, Hibernate, Spring, and other interesting Java related frameworks.

M.Sc. Thesis delivered

Today Xin Yao and I handed in our thesis at the IT-University of Copenhagen with the title "Distributed Transaction Management in SOA-based System Integration". Java EE 6 proposal published

The Java EE 6 proposal (JSR 316) was published yesterday. Rod Johnson (creator of the Spring Framework and the man originally against J2EE / EJB) has written a blog post "Java EE Gets it Right" where he welcomes the new JSR and looks forward to participate in the expert group. He thinks that Java EE 6 can solve many of the problems that has plagued the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE). He concludes:

I believe that the enterprise Java community should welcome Java EE 6, and should welcome Sun's willingness to move with the times and take the choices that will strengthen the enterprise Java platform as a whole. There's a lot of good in J2EE/Java EE, but some of the problems have obscured it. Java EE 6 should change that!

Back in April the WS-TX 1.1 standard (WS-Coordination, WS-AtomicTransaction and WS-BusinessActivity) got accepted as a standard by OASIS. The official announcement is now out as announced by Mark Little in this post at infoq.com. This is interesting because these standards, and transaction processing in a Web service context in general, is the primary focus in my ongoing thesis at the IT-University of Copenhagen.

At JavaOne, Sun announced what they call their Flash-killer: JavaFX. JavaFX is a runtime library and scripting language for rich clients. It this early stage it is accessable through dev.java.net. I tried some of the samples and it looks quite cool - especially compared to Sun's other UI tools like Swing. Even more exciting is the properties of the JavaFX scripting language described in this quote:

JavaFX Script is a highly productive scripting language that enables content developers to create rich media and content for deployment on Java environments. JavaFX Script is a declarative, statically typed programming language. It has first-class functions, declarative syntax, list-comprehensions, and incremental dependency-based evaluation. It can make direct calls to Java APIs that are on the platform. Since JavaFX Script is statically typed, it has the same code structuring, reuse, and encapsulation features (such as packages, classes, inheritance, and separate compilation and deployment units) that make it possible to create and maintain very large programs using Java technology.

If you like statically typed languages this is good news. Otherwise stick with Groovy or something like that.

There are already discussions on whether the Java runtime is the right delivery platform for something like this. Some of the problems with Java is that it is relatively heavy as opposed to Flash. You can read more about the negative sides in this post at theserverside.

JavaServer Faces 2.0 JSR draft

The Sun JSF team with Ed Burns in front has decided to go public with a pre-JCP-filing of the JSR for JavaServer Faces 2.0. You can read the announcement in this post from Ed Burns. The draft for the JCP-filing is located here.

This is cool stuff! It brings a lot of new features to JSF along with optimizations to the current release (JSF 1.2). The new specification is timed for release with Java EE 6 so we will have to wait until fall 2008 before the spec (hopefully) is done and then some years for vendors to fully implement the spec.

Quit as Microsoft Student Partner

As of February 2007 I officially quit as Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) at the IT-University of Copenhagen. I have to focus on my thesis, family, and job. After all I didn't feel I contributed much to the network and Henrik Westergaard Hansen (Academic Developer Evangelist at MS in Denmark) and I agreed on my resignation. It has been interesting to be part of the MSP network and I'll recommend students from ITU and other universities with interest in Microsoft technology (like ASP.NET, C#, LINQ, Visual Studio, Vista, XNA, WCF, WPF, Windows Mobile etc.) to consider the position. Just contact Henrik and I'm sure he will tell you all about it and consider you as candidate.
